Minister of Interior Calls on Citizens to Continue Cooperating in Cracking Down on Illegal Gambling

KANDAL: The Minister of Interior, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng, said that gambling is an issue that affects society and public order which requires the cooperation of all stakeholders and especially the public.

During the inauguration of the new Nurul Mutakin Mosque in Kandal province on 24 December 2022, Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng stated that the problem of gambling is spreading in Cambodia, especially in rural areas, requiring immediate resolution and further crackdowns.

He said that the problem of gambling not only affects the gamblers themselves but also their family life, security, and wider social order.

He said, "Gambling losses can result in families falling apart or lead to a criminal life of thieving or robbery…”

He added that online gambling is making the problem more pervasive. As technology advances, illegal online gambling continues to grow.

He said illegal online gambling is also linked to other activities, such as illegally smuggling people in to Cambodia, particularly by boat.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the Ministry of Interior has so far received nearly 700 complaints from alleged victims of human trafficking, physical abuse, and torture. The authorities are investigating these cases and have found some to be true.

The Minister of Interior said, "We cannot be negligent, this issue requires the support and participation of all [to be properly addressed]. Do not rely only on the authorities of provincial administrations, districts or commune councils, commune chiefs, police or military. We all must participate in building our society and cracking down on illegal gambling."
